How would you rate your own health? If you could achieve Optimal Wellbeing, would you want it? The good news is that transforming your life and creating a healthier lifestyle is possible! Most people already have the desire to make healthy changes but may not know the best methods for achieving and maintaining their ideal health. This is why the first element of OPTAVIA’s Four Components of Optimal Health is your Coach!

One-on-one personal support is what sets our Program apart from the other lifestyle programs out there. Your personal Coach is there to guide you and help you make healthy choices that lead to lifelong transformation. This custom support and guidance can help boost your progress in reaching your optimal weight. Your Coach will keep you accountable and celebrate all of your accomplishments along the way, the little ones and the big ones!

We’ve outlined some tips to consider when working with your Coach while on your OPTAVIA journey:

  • Keep in regular contact. The support of your OPTAVIA Coach helps keep you on your path towards Optimal Health and Wellbeing. Therefore, we recommend staying in consistent contact with your Coach throughout your journey to ensure you receive the utmost guidance and support. It’s important to establish regular wellness chats with your Coach and what means of contact work best for you both (i.e., via Zoom, phone call, email, etc.).
  • They’ve been there. Your OPTAVIA Coach has been in your shoes! He or she was most likely a Client on the OPTAVIA Program before becoming the Coach you now see. This means they can share personal tips and tricks with you, like the best time to eat your Fuelings, when to work healthy motion into your routine, which Program is best for you, and much more!
  • Share this journey with your Coach. This journey is YOURS to take. You are in control of your path to lifelong transformation, so be sure to celebrate this experience with your Coach along the way!

You’ve worked on shifting your habits, but the urge to revert back to old habits may still be there. This is normal and expected! Creating an environment that’s positive and conducive for change can aid in controlling these temptations. Our environment impacts our habits more than we might think, and we are often competing against it. Here are some pointers on how to create a positive environment and a climate that is conducive to change:

  • Create friction. Focus your energy on making it hard to continue old habits. Move your television out of the bedroom to promote healthy sleep habits. Stock the fridge with water to stop yourself from reaching for a soda. When you do this, it makes it easier to maintain healthy habits.
  • Control your environment. Controlling your environment means equipping it with everything you need to succeed in implementing the change that you want. It is more than removing temptations; it's about replacing old habits with new, more effective ones. Try setting an alarm on your phone for reminders to exercise, drink water, and practice mindfulness.
  • Try task association. Task association is a way to train your brain to complete a task automatically. Light a scented candle at night while practicing mindfulness. Each time you do, your mind will associate that task with that scent. This can also be practiced in other ways. For example, if you frequently eat at your desk, remove all snacks from near your desk to associate your desk as a place of work, not eating.
  • Establish a support system. All of these tasks are more challenging when you don't have support. Continue to build your health bubble and promote wellness by sharing your journey with your loved ones. When others are aware of the lifestyle that you are leading, they will likely align themselves with you or be considerate of your healthy efforts.

Yield: 4 servings

Total Time: 1 Hour

Complete Lean & Green Meal: 1 Lean, 3 Green, 3 Condiments

Ingredients

12 cups collard greens, chopped

(about 16 oz.)

1½ cups chicken stock

1¼ lb. 95% lean ground pork

2 eggs

½ tsp each: salt & pepper

2 tbsp low-fat parmesan cheese

1 tbsp balsamic vinegar

¼ cup hemp seeds, pumpkin, or sesame seeds

Directions

  1. In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil and add the collard greens. Cover and cook until the greens have reduced to half their original size, about 5 minutes. Drain the water, and add the chicken stock. Simmer collards in broth over medium-low heat for 20 to 30 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, make the meatballs by combining the ground pork, eggs, salt, and pepper—shape the mixture into 8 evenly-sized meatballs.
  3. Add the meatballs to the collards and simmer for 20 more minutes.
  4. Remove the meatballs, and stir in the hemp seeds, parmesan, and balsamic vinegar to the collard green mixture. Simmer for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld
  5. Serve meatballs on a bed of braised collards.

Falling Into Place

"I was already feeling depressed and sick, but it wasn't until my friend took a photo of me that I could see the person I had become. I knew it was not me, and I was not happy with myself."

Danielle had recently broken her ankle and was unable to move around, leading to a weight gain of 65 pounds on top of an already unhealthy body weight.

“I was suffering from depression, high blood pressure, and I had no energy. I wasn’t a good healthcare provider for my mother because I was tired all the time.

I knew I had to make a change, so I decided to try the OPTAVIA Program. I got an amazing Coach who helped me see that this wasn't a diet; it was a healthier way of life."

Danielle learned how to make healthy choices not just for her, but for her family. In addition to losing 150 pounds*, which was half of her body weight, Danielle is thrilled with how happy and healthy she has become.

“I have so much more energy. I’m active with my children, we go bike riding and play games. In addition to cooking healthy meals for my family, I’m also teaching my children how to make healthy choices.”

Danielle decided to become an OPTAVIA Coach so she could pay it forward and help others along their health journeys.

“It’s so great being a part of this amazing Community and helping people get a second lease on life. I’m so excited with the direction my life is going. It’s more than just the weight being gone. I finally feel like everything has fallen into place.”

*Average weight loss on the Optimal Weight 5 & 1 Plan® is 12 pounds. Clients are in weight loss, on average, for 12 weeks.
